World Food Day 2025: Nourishing Hope Across the Northern Cape
In the vast and often rugged landscape of the Northern Cape, the need for food security and daily nourishment remains ever-present. This year, on World Food Day – 16 October 2025, Meals on Wheels Northern Cape proudly joined the global movement to highlight the importance of ending hunger and ensuring access to nutritious meals for all.
Our dedicated teams worked tirelessly in towns and communities across the province, preparing and delivering over 3,500 freshly cooked, nutritious meals to individuals and families in need. From the dusty roads of Kuruman to the heart of Kimberley, our volunteers brought not only meals—but care, dignity, and hope.
World Food Day, spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, reminds us that “The future of food is in our hands.” But here in the Northern Cape, we know that it’s also in the hands of everyday heroes—our cooks, drivers, donors, and volunteers—who work behind the scenes all year round.
“You don’t need to wait for a special day to make a difference,” says Meals on Wheels Northern Cape coordinator, Gershon Naidoo. “Every plate of food we deliver is a message of hope—and every act of kindness helps us move one step closer to ending hunger.”
While World Food Day shines a spotlight on the issue, the work doesn’t stop here. In a province where many still face food insecurity, we are reminded that every day is an opportunity to serve, uplift, and nourish.
“Food is the moral right of all who are born into this world.” – Norman Borlaug
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed their time, resources, and compassion to this year's World Food Day initiative. Together, we are feeding bodies and nourishing souls—one meal at a time.

Meals on Wheels Extreme Cycle for Hunger 2025
It all begins with an idea.
The Meals on Wheels Extreme Cycle for Hunger 2025 was an incredible success, surpassing expectations and leaving a lasting impact on both the communities we served and the cyclists who participated. The event, dedicated to raising awareness of the ongoing hunger crisis in South Africa, united people from all walks of life in a shared mission of compassion and action.
Throughout the tour, we encountered inspiring individuals, heard powerful stories, and witnessed firsthand the difference our efforts can make in the fight against hunger. The cyclists, donors, volunteers, and institutions involved were all instrumental in making this event a true testament to the power of collective action.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to distribute over 9 tons of essential donations, including food, clothing, and hygiene products, to various institutions that support vulnerable communities across South Africa. These contributions went directly to local shelters, hospices, schools, and community centers, where they helped provide critical resources to those most in need.
The cyclists, who dedicated their time, energy, and enthusiasm to the cause, rode across various challenging terrains, symbolizing the endurance and resilience required to overcome the hunger crisis. Their commitment not only raised funds but also brought much-needed attention to the issue of food insecurity, fostering a sense of solidarity among all who were involved.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the cyclists who took part in this extraordinary journey. Their unwavering dedication to the cause and willingness to push their limits for such an important cause was truly inspiring.
A special thank you is also due to our incredible donors, whose generous contributions made the event possible. Without their support, we would not have been able to achieve such a significant impact. Their commitment to alleviating hunger in South Africa has directly improved the lives of countless individuals and families.
The Extreme Cycle for Hunger 2025 reminds us of the profound difference we can make when we come together as a community. As we reflect on the success of this event, we are reminded that our work is far from over. The hunger crisis in South Africa remains a pressing issue, but with continued support, we can continue to bring hope and relief to those who need it most.
We look forward to continuing this vital work and are grateful to all who have joined us on this journey. Together, we are making a tangible difference.
Thank you once again to everyone who made the Meals on Wheels Extreme Cycle for Hunger 2025 a success!
A Lifeline in Danielskuil
It all begins with an idea.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the streets of Danielskuil were quiet, but behind closed doors, many households were facing a silent crisis. Lockdowns, job losses, and economic uncertainty had left families wondering where their next meal would come from. For many, cooked meals were simply no longer an option — food was scarce, and hope was fading.
Among them was the Jacobs* family — a grandmother raising her two grandchildren after their parents had lost their jobs. With no steady income and strict movement restrictions, their pantry was emptying fast. The fear of hunger became part of their daily reality.
That’s when Meals on Wheels Northern Cape, in association with Meals on Wheels Community Services South Africa, arrived.
Through the support of our partners and donors, we delivered urgently needed food hampers directly to families like the Jacobs'*. Each hamper was filled with essentials: maize meal, rice, tinned foods, oil, and basic hygiene products — enough to help them get through the most uncertain days.
“It was like someone remembered us when we felt completely forgotten,” Mrs. Jacobs* said tearfully. “The food not only fed us, but it gave us hope to hold on a little longer.”
For hundreds of households across Danielskuil and the Northern Cape, these hampers were a lifeline during one of the most difficult times in recent history. And while the world may slowly be returning to normal, the gratitude of families like the Jacobs' remains a reminder of how powerful a simple act of kindness can be.
Because of your support, we were able to stand in the gap when it mattered most.
