Cycling for Survival: The Heart Behind the Extreme Cycle for Hunger

What drives a group of people to cycle hundreds of kilometers under a punishing sun, facing dry heat and exhaustion?

It isn’t just about the sport. It’s about the Extreme Cycle for Hunger—an initiative born from a simple, urgent necessity: making sure the most vulnerable members of our communities don’t go to bed hungry.

The Journey So Far

Our 2026 journey kicked off on 25 February in Alberton. From the moment we set off toward Klerksdorp, the mission became personal.

• A Stop for the Soul: In Klerksdorp, we visited Mama Lucia. She has opened her heart and her home to abandoned children, providing a sanctuary for those who have nowhere else to go. Meeting people like her reminds us why we do this; there is truly a special place in heaven for those who dedicate their lives to the voiceless.

• The Reality of the Struggle: As we pushed forward in soaring temperatures toward Wolmaransstad, the physical toll of the heat was a small price to pay compared to the reality we found at the Wolmaransstad Hospice.

A Timely Arrival

The situation at the hospice is a stark reminder of the hunger crisis. The administrator shared a heartbreaking truth: they had no food left in their kitchen. When our convoy—including the truck loaded with donations—pulled in, the relief was palpable. It wasn’t just a delivery; it was a lifeline. Seeing that gratitude firsthand reinforces our "why." We cycle so that institutions like Wolmaransstad Hospice don't have to face an empty pantry while caring for the terminally ill.

"We don't just ride for the distance; we ride for the difference."

The road ahead is long, and the heat is intense, but as long as there are kitchens to fill and heroes like Mama Lucia to support, we keep pedaling.
